The Houses That George Built: Coastal Development of Third Cliff-Rivermoor in Scituate, Massachusetts
Welcome to the Third Cliff Development website! After I started this, I wrote and published three books involving Third Cliff. For more information, see my website www.lylenyberg.com.
Here are maps and photos to accompany my second book, On A Cliff. It covers the history of Third Cliff and its Rivermoor section, and the development of summer housing in Scituate. The community went from farming to summer housing to year-round housing.
The development of Third Cliff traces back to Irish immigrant Michael Welch, his son E. Parker Welch, and E. Parker Welch's son George Welch. George Welch developed Rivermoor in the early 1900s. The photo above, today's Scituate Country Club clubhouse, was the family home of the Welches. It was labeled "House 100 yrs. old" on an 1879 map.
The "Photo Gallery" tab has various maps and photos. Click once on the square thumbnail to get the full image, with credits. The other tabs are not filled in.
